HOW A MENOPAUSE NUTRITIONIST CAN HELP YOU

Good Reasons to see a Menopause Nutritionist

You might have decided you want an alternative to HRT to help your symptoms. Or you may be happy on HRT but still feel you’ve a way to go to feel like you’re firing on all cylinders.

As a menopause nutritionist I will take a very close look at your diet and nutrition. If they are not as good as they could be, you can suffer during the menopause.

  • Your blood sugar balance may be “off”. You might get cravings for sweet foods or carbohydrates. As well as your hormones, this impacts your energy, your mood, anxiety and stress levels.
  • You might not be getting quite enough specific vitamin and minerals which support your hormones
  • You might be lacking in antioxidants which are a great defence against ageing and chronic diseases of middle age
  • Your gut microbiome may not be in good shape which impacts your hormones and mental health
  • You may have inflammation in your body which can lead to chronic health issues
  • If you are overweight (or underweight), this disrupts hormone balance

Too much Publicity?

Menopause has very much been in the public eye over the past couple of years or so.  This is a great improvement on the secrecy and mystery surrounding what used to be called “The Change” not so long ago.  We can now talk openly about menopausal symptoms and there has been pressure on parliament for change in how menopause is dealt with both in the workplace and regarding the availability of HRT.

That said, I’ve found there is also a negative angle to all the publicity. I see women becoming fearful of menopausal symptoms before they have any. They are expecting the worst and dreading menopause.

Menopause Reframed

In Chinese medicine, the menopause is viewed more positively as the “second spring”.

In my nutrition practice, I view menopause as a natural transition rather than a deficiency disease. If you are experiencing symptoms and not feeling your old self, you need a re-set. Diet and lifestyle changes have a hugely powerful and positive impact.

My goal is to support your physical and mental resilience in the face of all the hormonal changes taking place. I like to think of it as navigating a stormy sea with a strong, watertight boat rather than a battered, leaky one! Diet and nutrition play a very important part in strengthening your boat.

Menopause Defined

Menopause in its literal sense means the last menses or period. It is defined medically as not having had a period for a year. The medical term for what is commonly referred to as the menopause, is in actual fact the peri-menopause, a phase which can last 10 years or more, in which the hormones are fluctuating and symptoms are occurring.

During the peri-menopause, progesterone usually drops first followed by decreasing oestrogen. Periods can stop suddenly, become heavier or lighter or the cycle can shorten or lengthen. The levels of FSH will keep increasing in order to try and stimulate the ovaries to produce oestrogen.

The main symptoms that can be experienced are hot flushes, insomnia, weight gain, reduced libido, mood swings, loss of bone density, vaginal dryness, loss of skin elasticity and tone, dry eyes, headaches, and fatigue.

As discussed, how well you cope with the hormone fluctuations of the menopause, depends on your overall health and resilience.  Working on your nutrition is a very important part of this.
